                                                           JOB DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE:              Bus Paraprofessional

TYPE OF POSITION:  Classified

REPORTS TO:           Director of Transportation

 

POSITION PURPOSE: To assist the driver to achieve transportation objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the transportation goals as a whole.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  1. Assist the bus driver in loading and unloading the students which are being transported.
  2. Assist the bus driver in cleaning both the inside and outside of the bus.
  3. Become familiar with each student being transported with respect to their disabilities and the medication (if any) the student may be taking.
  4. Assist the driver in developing an emergency evacuation plan.
  5. Assure that the students being transported are positioned in the most comfortable position possible.
  6. Report any problems to the bus driver regarding wheelchairs and wheelchair locks.
  7. Report to the bus driver any seizures that may occur on the bus, and respond to that seizure by notifying teacher, parent, etc.
  8. Learn to appropriately operate the FM two-way radio.
  9. Become familiar and be able to carry out an emergency procedure in case a situation would occur that would require a run to the hospital.
  10. Carry out any other reasonable requests the bus driver may ask of the bus paraprofessional.

The bus paraprofessional is encouraged to take the necessary test to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). This license, when accompanied with the safety certification would make the bus paraprofessional eligible on the bus substitute driver's list. However, the CDL is not required for this job.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

     l . High school diploma, or equivalent

  1. Ability to plan and organize.
  2. Skills in human relations.
  3. Other qualifications as deemed desirable by the School Board.

The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and taste or smell.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Environmental hazards for this position would be possible contact with body fluids, hot and cold temperatures and the typical hazards of highway transportation.

 

TERMS: Length of year and rate of pay to be determined by the School Board.
